Abstract of Dongtan Structural Master Plan

In January 2001, SIIC and Shanghai Institute of Urban Planning and Design co-organized an event to invite bidders for the "conceptual planning of Chongming Dongtan and the Chenjia town". The designated area for planning stretches 150 square kilometers along Coastal Avenue including the Chenjia town. WS ATKINS GROUP from Britain, PHILIP JOHNSON/ALAN RITCHIE Architects & Studio BAAD from America and ARCHITECTURE STUDIO from France participated in this bidding. In July 2001, SIIC and the Shanghai Institute of Urban Planning and Design invited experts to evaluate the planning proposals. The proposal prepared by American PHILIP JOHNSON architecture and design company, was chosen as the most suitable and a request was made for their plan to be presented in further detail. In November 2001, SIIC formally entrusted the Shanghai Institute of Urban Planning and Design to map out the "Structure Planning and Design for Chongming Dongtan, Shanghai".
